Abstract

Datadog adds powerful visualization and querying tools on top of existing OTel instrumentation. First, you'll explore metric types, best practices, and important OTel metric concepts. Then, you'll add OTel custom metrics to a Kubernetes application for use in Datadog. After instrumentation, you'll visualize your OTel metrics using Datadog's query and aggregation tools.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you'll be able to do the following:

  • Instrument a service with OTel custom metrics
  • Compare the tradeoffs between custom metric types
  • Describe tagging best practices for OTel metrics
  • Find and visualize custom metrics within Datadog

Primary Audience

This course is for developers and SREs working on OTel-configured applications who are familiar with monitoring basics such as metrics, logs, and traces. You have created metrics previously, and want to use best practices for Datadog compatibility.
